LJ PSA
If, like me, the very idea of the new nudge feature makes your ears boil and skin crawl (yes, despite the fact that it only works for mutually friended LJ's; I read the FAQ), and you find yourself, as usual, muttering about why the hell doesn't LJ consult the frakking users before implementing rude and intrusive crap like this?

Or you know, if it just annoys you and you want to turn it off so no one can 'nudge' you?

Go to the admin console and paste in:

set disable_nudge 1

(People who are having fun with nudging and being nudged and think it's cool, more power to you - I just want to be told it exists before it's put into place, and choose to turn it on, in a prominent place like user settings vs an admin console code that I have to read the FAQ on nudge to find in the first place, not a default setting that I have to turn off. WTF, LJ, WTF.)

ETA: Oh, it's in the frelling FAQ, but it's not it wasn't live yet. See the ears? That was theoretical boiling before.

You cannot turn this off yet. The ability to 'opt out' should be live... in a few hours. It is in fact live now. Which doesn't change an iota of the ranty bits. ;-)

WT-fucking-F, LJ? Do you never learn from the experience of sending shit live that makes sweeping changes to the site, without consulting a user-base bigger than, oh, the development team, or even warning people in advance that it's going to be happening?

Yes, I was just muttering under my breath about this exact thing. You would think that if you were introducing a new feature that most people with half a brain can predict is going to annoy some people, you would make sure that the opt out option is introduced at the same time.

Stupid, stupid people.

(and these stupid internal errors are getting out of hand too -- so far I've had 7 just trying to post this one little comment)

(and then 3 errors trying to delete the double post! ARG! At least I'm having much reason for using my Crais icon...)

It's in the FAQ, though the FAQ structure is such that (unless they've vastly redesigned it) you have to go spelunking to find things. And then you have to spelunk your way to the admin consle, and then IT DOESN'T WORK because the code's not live yet.

It worked for me just now. But I have put my complaint in to news. Considering all the discussion at featureannounce, you would have thought they'd make sure it was live and even put it in the announcement. People aren't that easily convinced that something's good for them.

I found out in one of the suggestions posts that featureannounce was all volunteer run and that sometimes they only get a couple hours notice before something goes live. Also, their posts are commentless, so no discussion... you know, like the obvious question we all had this weekend, if there's an admin control to turn off nudging, what the hell is it.

I've been getting internal errors so often that I've taken to copying comments to my clipboard before trying to post them, because losing a comment in a locked fic-writing post I've been writing for an hour is OMG SO ANNOYING. I've lost comments and then had to try to re-create them, which of course makes me want to bash my head against the wall.

I was more willing to cut LJ slack when it was Brad and Some of His Friends. Now that it's all "professional," I except some degree of professionalism, even when I'm not getting it.

I just. If they would only learn from the uproar that comes every time they roll something like this out without reasonable warning or timely opt-out options...

I had not heard of the nudge feature and clicked on the link to investigate. What utterly useless, extraneous frippery. There is so much else they could have spend their time developing.

Some people are finding it fun, which is fine for them - I just think dudes, if you want to do something useful in that direction, make username@livejournal.com work for all accounts instead of just paid ones, have an "e-mail this user" link, and force the person to at least write their own message.

The disable function seems to be working now.

I wasn't really irate in terms of the thing itself, since it'd only been since the morning, that I last updated, and don't see it likely that I'll ever go 7 days without posting something.

I was just pissed at the...well. Piss-poor-planning, on LJ's part.

I love you for passing this on and I've done it, I think. Will try again tomorrow just in case.

A thousand thank yous for passing on the 'off' settings. Seriously, LJ, how about start fixing what's actually broken? [sigh]

mpoetess

2006-01-18 02:45 am (UTC) (Link)

How about a) stop the memories from breaking so often, and b) give them a decent editing page/system, like tags, instead of this crap where if you want to change the name of a memory category, you have to separately edit each bookmark...

The only thing I kinda regret is that turning it off doesn't leave me the option to bitch at the people rude enough to use it. *grin*

Thanks for the admin console command, very helpful. I'm gacking at the idea of nudging. Blech.

yeah, aside from BFF who are doing it to tease each other, I just can't think of any situation in which that "So be a friend and update!" would be appropriate. Or, you know, not make me want to punch someone's face in.
