*eyes recent spoilery discussions around the Eljay about the Buffy Season 8 storyline*

Oh, Joss. Oh honey. You are such a fandom troll.

(I can only bear to giggle instead of gnash teeth because he frankly lost any chance at my considering the comics part of the canon continuity when Skinless Warren walked into the picture. Or rather when I realized a bit later the reason he shouldn't be walking into the picture besides 'Oh God not him again.')

...Yeah, I know. Giant Dawn I can handle. Buffy and Satsu, I can not only handle, I loved, in all its doomed-to-failure fuckeduppery, because it was interesting. (Dear fandom: here is a Kinsey Scale. Step on it.) But 'oops, when we brought back this character and said he survived, we forgot we used him as a plot point in an arc about a creature that can only impersonate the dead?' That'd be the point where it became fanfic.

Hahhaha. Too true. This is why I still keep up with it, even if I'm not actually reading the comics themselves. It's just too entertaining not to.

Ah, fuck. Yeah.

...still, the First impersonated Buffy, so clearly it didn't mean one had to be permanently dead; conceivably his heart could have stopped when Willow got all flaytastic, only to be restarted moments later by Amy? I mean, granted that's fannish handwaving, but it's not a big stretch - he's being maintained in his gruesome state by magical means, so the notion that this included resuscitation isn't all THAT out there...?

Why yes, I AM loath to lose the Buffy/Satsu thing. Although I could really, REALLY do without poor Renee's storyline. Introducing a cool character of colour and fridging her so that Xander can be all wounded woobie, and having her LAST THOUGHTS AS SHE DIES be all about not telling him she loved him (rather than about her family, ffs, or being pissed off at dying so fucking pointlessly)...that, I did not love. Although I did enjoy the hell out of Dracula. But not enough to give them a pass.

I'm told that was the explanation for Warren, yeah, but that it was asked and answered in the letters column and not in the text. Which... faaaaail.

I was not pleased with the Renee thing either. Not specifically on the fridging angle (I see it, but it's also Jossland where girls die to make men feel bad allll the time, so this was just one more) but because we already had this moment, people. Why waste an interesting character on repeating something you already did with Anya, why pile tragedy on Xander until it's at over-the-top levels of ridiculousness (something I hated equally when it was done to Buffy in Season 5/6/7)... just... meh. (Not saved for me by Dracula because I haaaaaaate the 'Xander bonded with Dracula after Anya died' thing. What. What. JFC no.)

I thought I was all about the canon but if it's not written in script form and then acted out by the correct actors in front of television cameras it quickly becomes fanfiction in my eyes - even if penned by Joss. And it has nothing to do with the plot inconsistencies because TV shows have those all the time.

I often envy people who not only like fanfiction but revel in it.

I should say, it's not that the plot inconsistency is a fanficcy thing by nature - I agree that the show itself has them. I just mean that that particular plot inconsistency is the one that made me throw up my hands and say "No, seriously, no. This is now an AU. I disown it."

Yes, that's about the time I stopped reading as well. I never liked Warren, and that was just too much.

I . . . have pretty much given up on the storyline as a whole at this point and am really only reading for the occasional random bits of amusing dialogue.

What? It's not like I'm gonna get that other thing I was hoping for. :P

I totally gave up on the comics in the same issue Warren was brought back, but for the way Joss killed Ethan as practically a freaking afterthought. Way to completely waste an intriguing character for no reason.

So as far as I'm concerned, my official Buffy canon ends at Chosen.

Yeeeah, you've heard my thoughts on that too. Of all the people to kill to make a point to Buffy, they pick Ethan Rayne?
