Going through Season 1 Angel caps for iconage, and it's making me bloody well mist up. How much did these people love each other, huh?

I know. I miss the days when there were only three of them, and they all loved and took care of one another because family meant family. I knew the first inter-MOG 'ship was the end of an era.

I dunno about the shippage necessarily -- I mean, Doyle always had it bad for Cordy, and maybe a little for Angel. But I think that's the key -- even then, they were still *family*. Something that got even more cemented with the Cordy/Angel/Wes trio, that didn't have any acknowledged shippiness in it at all. Add early Gunn into the mix and it's still good, though I think Gunn was almost that first step away -- you could see he thought of *Wes* as family at a certain point, and then Cordy after Angel fired them, but I don't know if he was ever as close to Angel as any of the otehrs have been.

You're right, there was lots of romantic tension, but there weren't any onscreen relationships, which was my point. Gunn fit into the mix, but he seemed to be "the new guy" for a while until they started writing him consistantly and he got into a groove with the rest of AI. I'm just saiying that inter-AI dating (like Gunn/Fred) completely took away from the 'family' feeling, but that could've also been sontributed to by the growing cast as well.

I get ya. I think you're right -- at least with those later-season dynamics. Every acknowledged romantic entanglement brought jealousy and distrust.

I dunno if Cordy/Doyle would've necessarily broken up the gang so much, if GQ had stayed in the cast -- but then, if something that massive had happened differently that early, god knows where they'd be now.

Which is why my OTP for Angel-verse will always be the Angel/Cordy/Wes friendship. For once I liked a show with no romantic tendencies.
*sigh*

I bought the DVD this past weekend and I've already watched a couple of episodes and am feeling terribly nostalgic. I miss Doyle and Lindsay. And I miss *that* Cordelia. I love Wesley but I just don't think the current crew has the same connection that Angel, Doyle, and Cordelia had. The three of them had that extra spark.

I love the Doyle-cordy-angel dynamic, and the early wes-cordy-angel dynamic -- like in "Expecting" -- I think they both haad that friends-who-are-family thing down.
