Trouble with a capital A
That rhymes with something or other.

To Myself At Twelve

I would tell you, if you'd listen,
Not to dye your hair
When you turn fifteen,
And not to crash your car into
The back of a trailer on the fourth of July,
And to develop a hatred for
Pasta and cheeseburgers
While you still have a chance,
But I know you,
And by the time
The time rolls around,
You will have forgotten
That some idiot warned you,
Like your mother, who will fall
In and out of your life
With the timing of a Taiwanese watch,
That your hair would turn green
(It won't.)
And your car will roll in slow motion
Into a muddy ditch
As you listen to country music in the rain.
(It will.)
Mostly I would tell you
Aside from last year's lottery numbers,
Which you would write on a scrap
Of notebook paper and lose anyway,
Not to forget what you know now.
Or, if you must forget,
If it's too much to save for me,
This knowledge of how the world works
That I faintly remember you having,
Tell me now.
Give it up- it'll do you no good anyway.
I would tell you, if you'd listen,
That you will grow up to be a fool,
But you're not listening. I remember.
