Snerrrrk! That's what it's all about, yo.
Posted on my archives and archivists listserv:

The following is from the Washington Post Style Invitational contest that asks readers to submit "instructions" for something (anything), but written in the style of a famous person. The winning entry was "The Hokey Pokey" as written by Shakespeare.

O proud left foot, that ventures quick within
Then soon upon a backward journey lithe.
Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:
Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.

Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke,
Mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.
To spin! A wilde release from Heaven's yoke.
Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl.

The Hoke, the Poke -- banish now thy doubt
Verily, I say, 'tis what it's all about.

by William Shakespeare

Me too! Every so often that mailing list -- otherwise deadly dull -- comes up with a gem.

Innit? I seethe with jealousy at the author (who wasn't named in the ML post, sadly).

That entry was by Jeff Brechlin of Potomac Falls. You can see the other entries here ( In my opinion, this was one of the better contests they've ever run.

You're right -- they were all a hoot.

Brilliant. That needs a frame, almost.

I'm tempted to print it out and post it at work, right next to TBQ's "God in the pledge of allegiance" rant.

Love that. I know a few people who really need to see that.

I gotta say, I love your icon.

I am not sure if I love it more than the Shakesperian Hokey Pokey. I love them both, it's like green tea ice cream to me.
