Oh Christ. I go to sleep for a while and I come back to this crap. I mean ppl that don't like or read slash because of "trendiness" are just plain stupid. If you don't like, then you don't like. Never try to say this is reason cause it just doesn't hold water for me. I mean I don't read Spuffy stuff anymore because I don't like it that much, but Do I say that ppl shouldn't read because it trivializes domestic abuse. I mean in the show Spike has beaten the crap out of buffy and vice versa. So in opinion Abuse. I mean I would want a woman or a man to never venture in to such a relationship real or fiction. However, that is not the reason I don't read it. I just don't like it cause Well that fanfic story arc holds no appeal to me. I applaud the ppl that still write it cause I know I could never write period. If you don't like it fine, but don't hide behind "trendiness" or someone saying that these stories "trivializes the plight of gay culture in a biased violent society". Ok that was my two cents.

Pretty much.

Exploitative, my ass, basically.

Basically, all this bitching about slash being the New Black, and it's addictive and exploitative and we don't hate it, we just hate the bad stuff that's not well thought out although we can't *point* to which bad stuff that is because *that* bad stuff was always there, and the stuff that's being written in the new wave is by people whose writing we respect even if we'd rather they were writing Spuffy so we're not going to name them?

Sour. Fucking. Grapes.

lol. it is Sour fucking Grapes, but I hate when ppl bitch about something that has been here for years. Sure there is going to be a surge in Slash for a bit, but then you might just find an author that is talented as the ones that are now staples of the fanfic slash community. But whatever.

Which is really the best part of the bitching... somewhere in there, someone called Angel/Spike slash a brand new trend.

Uh... yeah. OK. May I point you towards this little archive called UCSL, and the yahoogroup that goes with it, and the egroup before that and... oh fuck it. It's new. Right. What. Ever. *sigh*

See, and excuse me if I get my bitch hat on, what's happening is that the people bitching? Are -- for the most part -- hetshippers who've always been hetshippers and could ignore the slash -- until their favorite het writers started writing it. That's what's new. That people they thought were firmly esconced in their chairs ready to churn out the exact sort of fiction that *they* like, have discovered something they're not interested in, and their entertainment supply seems to be drying up, and their personal preferences seem to be not verified as teh Bestest anymore.

But of course we can't *say* that to the writers we still respect or at least want to like us and/or write the kind of fic we like, so we have to complain that slash is OOC and just a trend and destroying the fandom, don't you know. Because then maybe anniesj and herself_nyc and eliade will write more Spuffy and all will be well.

Ah, and I had MISSED that particular layer in the overall griping and stupidity arguing about slash, trendy couples and the general downfall of civilization as we know it. Other than making the ridiculous plea that we should all be able to get along (and really, dude, I can't even type that with a straight face), I can't think of any kind of comeback to the accusations that this "trend" of hetshippers to the dark, souleating, endless-hell-of-slash is tearing fandom apart. It's just... I mean... damn...

You can't get this shit in SV, man. This is the good wank.

And FWIW, that's just my observation -- that the people I've seen bitching about slash have mostly been hetshippers, who coicidentally happen to be friends/acquaintances/fans of the recent influx of het-gone-slashers.

And the damn thing is, like Annie's said a couple of times, it's not even that they've stopped writing the things that people were fans of them for. Annie's still writing Spuffy, Herself is still writing Spuffy, Anna was having problems with Noir even before she started seriously getting into the Spike/Xander (I believe; I'm happy to be corrected.) and she's still working with it. It just seems like that's not *enough* for some readers -- like. I don't know. Like they want to be able to say they read and like everything of a writer's, so instead of just saying "Hey, the slash stuff isn't my thing, so I haven't been reading it" they have to get bitter and bitch about the *genre*, and describe why it's horrible and bad in the abstract, but of course not when their favorite writers write it.

Man, if slash doesn't entertain [general bitching plural you] most of the time, just say so and move on. Admit that there's stories of your favorite writer's that you don't want to read because you don't like the pairing/subject/setting. Here -- I'll start. Hi; I'm Amy. I'm not going to read a *damn* thing from Te's "Kill Your Babies" challenge because I. Don't. Like. Main. Character. Death. I don't care who writes it.

See how easy that was?

Hi, I'm Lar and I hate the feminizing of men in slash. I delete stories unread past the first hint of any appearance of the girly-men who bear no resemblance to the characters I know and love (or even like.)

crowd chants: Hi Lar!

Hee!

Also FWIW, I don't mean people who just don't have a thing for slash, and/or have noticed that there *is* a big influx of people discovering that they like both slash and het. Wisteria's original comments on it didn't bother me at all.

It's just the folks who seem like they have to prove there's something wrong and bad happening to the fandom, who have a *problem* with other people writing fic they're not interested in that no one's forcing them to read, who are getting up my nose. If this isn't the clearest case of "Don't like it, ignore it" that I've ever seen, I'll eat.. um. I don't know. anniesj's boobies.

"Hey, there's a big trend of people getting into slash who didn't used to be -- it's not my thing, really, and I'm a bit disappointed that there's less of the fic I do like from these people." = Totally cool.

"I'm really getting sick of all the slash that people are writing. It's just a big bandwagon and they're just doing it to see two hot guys together and that's disrespectful to real gay guys" = No one is making you read it, and please name the 'bad' writers. I'd bet quite a bit of money that you either can't, because you're thinking of an author you usually like but don't want to be seen insulting, or it's someone who was *always* a bad writer, and probably an original fluffyduffy-don't-need-a-beta, just-doing-this-for-fun slasher.

No I get exactly where you're coming from, and you're right, 100% dead on right. I've never meant to come across as being against those writers who don't like or even buy into the slash vibe at all. Hell, you ship who you want, who am *I* to say what works, I write freaking Lindsey/Riley, for the love of all thing Jossy. But it's the dissmissive "just a trend" attitude that tweaks me. Also, yeah, we've been wading through badfic for years, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting badfic writers, surely you can POINT ONE OUT.

*waves hands in annoyance* It's just so silly. Like you said, if you want to be sad because your fave Spuffy writer has found a new topic that caught her attention, be sad. I'll hand you the tissues. More great Buffy writers have left the fandom altogether than I care to count, and I can relate to the loss of the work of your favorite people. Luckily there's still amazing folks left, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't all sniffly about the ones who aren't here no more. (*sniffle*) But I haven't started ranting about the other fandoms that seduced them away. I just miss them. It's not the other fandom's fault that they appeared all shiny and new.

Unless it's those damn HP plagiarists, those perverted popslashers, or those snotty BNF SV freaks, of course.

Doing one post so I do not spam your LJ. =)

You took the words right out of my mouth. The people bitching seem to be the ones who hate how some of the het writers are now doing slash, like we've "corrupted" them or something. Would this be happening of Anna and AnnieSJ and Herself weren't doing slash? Possibly but somehow I doubt it.

WRT to the "now it's trendy and bad" argument - uh, what? I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that a year ago all slashfic was wonderful, well-written, had stunning characterization and rivaled Shakespeare in its quality, for verily all slashfic back then was good because it was written For Art and Queers Everywhere [tm].

You know, LJ really needs to install the snopes board system where you can easily insert that smiley face that rolls its eyes. I haven't had a need to use it so much in my life.
