Ah, Real Life

From which we hide our petty fandom squabbles in shame and ignominy.

From a certain professional listserv I'm subscribed to:

Can't the members of this group have a discussion, of any type, without calling each other names and slinging sarcastic remarks? Some of you are just unbelievably rude.

I mean, seriously, don't you have enough work to do?

delete, delete, delete

(Though to be fair, the list isn't nearly as wanky as most fandom lists. The people on it just live sheltered lives, so when someone does get flamey or stupid, it attracts undue attention.)

This particular pro list even comes with a resident... I hate to call him a troll -- he's more of a harmless but annoying nutter. Who posts random articles with little or no explanation as to why the list should find them useful or interesting, and incomprehensible -- but polite! -- rants about how a particular public library is trying to keep (unspecified) information from its patrons. He seldom if ever says anything directed to the actual listmembers, and I suspect his posts are crossposted to as many information-profession lists as he can find. And no one will tell him to bugger off, because we're all so professional and he's so harmless...

I'm not sure there actually is a moderator, oddly enough. :) At least I don't think I've ever seen anyone step in to make a modly type post.

But no, the guy knows he's essentially spamming; he's been doing it for years. There's even a website dedicated to the trail of bizarre conspiracy theory posts he's left across mailing lists and usenet. It's a very funny read.
