That Songvid Thing
Item the First and Unrelated: intolerant asshats who googlebomb-link the word Jew. to a hate site suck beyond the telling of it, and lead to people trying to unbomb said word: Jew. If you have a website or journal that isn't blocked against spidering/indexing, especially a high-traffic one, go forth and multiply the wikipedia link (or any non-hate-site, but the wikipedia link is the second google result right now, so it has the highest chance of knocking the intolerant asshats out of the top spot), making sure that the link-text is the word Jew.

Item the Second and To the Point: New songvid, premiered at ConneXions 2004.

Ghost. Everybody's got one.

BtVS/Angel fandom. Music by the Indigo Girls. Giles/Ethan, Buffy/Faith. 5 min, 07 seconds; Windows Media, 12.9 mb. (The high-quality version can be made available on request, but it's 26 mb.)

Wow. This is a great video that actually convinces me that Buffy and Faith *love* each other. Not just like to have hot sweaty sex with each other, but really love. And it's been a long time since I've seen love like that.

Thank you for sharing your talents with us. :)

Thank you! I'm so glad that came across -- that amid the attaction and jealousy and confusion, there was something like love there, at least at the end. Not romantic love, but just the fact that they could trust and rely on each other in the final fight, despite all their baggage. I really wish that had been more to the fore in the last few episodes, but I'm not unhappy with what we did get.

God, that was so great! I wish desparately I had a cable hook up...it took ages to load, but it was SO worth it. DO you have these burned on dvd or anything? *yearning*

I'm floored!

Thanks so much!

And yeah, I'm with you on the download time. I'm on dialup and uploaded it from home!

I don't have them on dvd (the VCDs I burned ended up being rather awful in quality, which may be blame-able on the particular software; not sure) but wolfling and I might eventually put a VHS tape together, and possibly she'll make a dvd from that, since she has an actual dvd recorder. Short answer: not at the moment, sadly.

This is a good vid, but the viewpoint starts getting slippy about half-way through. Are you switching the viewpoints to track with the singers (I can't consistently tell the difference between the two Indigo Girls) or something else I'm missing?

mpoetess

2004-04-07 03:17 pm (UTC) (Link)

It's actually meant to switch back and forth between partners for the verses and choruses, regardless of the singer (I think Emily is always singing melody, anyway; just sometimes the harmony line is more noticeable and sometimes it isn't) [specifics spoiler-texted to avoid messing people up with what I wanted them to see vs. what they actually saw] i.e. 1st verse Giles, second verse Ethan, chorus Ethan, each gets an "in love with your ghost" line, then shifting to Buffy's verse that leads to Faith in the coma, then Faith rewinding and showing the same events from her POV, then using the bridge to wake up and advance things to S4. Then Ethan POV in the bar, switching to Giles when demon!Giles enters the room, switching to Buffy as she thwaps Ethan on the head and moves through S6 and into her reunion with Faith, switching to Faith as soon as Buffy punches and into the chorus, building up as the axe gets passed back and forth to a Buffy/Faith medley where they essentially share the same memories of fighting together, then Giles on his own, drawing on the ghost of his youth with the implication that a lot of his own personal strength stems from his time with Ethan and what he did and didn't learn -- then the escape and a softer repeat of Buffy/Faith together if not Together, and Giles alone thinking of Ethan] - but just because the pov is clear in my head doesn't mean it's at all clear in the presentation.

I know I've told you how much I love this vid, but I feel the need to say it again.

Squee!

Seriously, two of my favorite pairings, a beautiful song, and lovely cuts that fit. It's so good, P, and it's one of the very few vids that will permanently take up space on my hard drive. You did an incredible job.

I'll be perfectly honest and tell you that I haven't seen that many vid's, but I found this to be achingly beautiful. I'm not really a fan of either 'ship but it made them believable for me. They way you've cut the scenes was really....romantic? I don't know if thats what you were going for, but like someone else has already mentioned , it seemed to be a tale of love rather than lust. Thanx for sharing and if you've got any vid's you'd like to rec, let me know.

Thank you so much!

I don't know if I was going specifically for "romantic" vs. "desperate" but I'm not at all sad if it came out that way. Their sort of love/hate/rivalry makes for a twisted kind of romance that's definitely appealing to me.

Vid recs? Do I have vid recs? Headtilt.com = sisabet, drdawn and caphricacorn and a metric ton of kickass vids. Myrtle&Eunice -- espeically the Buffy season 2 vid "Fragile." Luminosity = sockpuppett, who did My West Hollywood Lifestyle, Whatever (aka Just How Gay Is Angel? We're So Glad You Asked) with Sisabet, in addition to her own solo stuff like End of the World As We Know It. Paper Cup = heresluck = gorgeous Buffy/Faith/pointyweapons=OneTrueThreesome vid called Superstar, among others. laurashapiro (whose vids require a password, but they're well worth the trouble of e-mailing her for it. Wendy (kitkatbyte) has done my favorite Xander (actually Xander/Buffy, or perhaps Xander-and-Buffy) vid so far, to "Sleepwalker." Wolfling is my viddery partner in crime, when it comes to beta-ing and trading clips, though we've yet to actually do a vid together.

Wonderful. I have loved that song since it came out, and it is well-paired. See damn, now I'll be humming that song all night.

The way you talk in previous comments about how B&F's relationship isn't romantic love, but trust love, friendship love, could be quite true, a very valid canon-y interpretation. But your vid does not explicitly preclude romantic love either -- that's good, a good vid does leave some interpretation open to the viewer. Wow, great job.

The heart on the classroom glass is my fav. B/F image, glad it was so pivotal in the vid.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm more the comedy gal, so Rockridge is still my favorite of your vids, because, funny!!

*hides in shame at own horrible vid*

2004-04-07 08:34 pm (UTC) (Link)

Thankee! I love the heart scene too -- and Buffy's reaction to Faith getting her out of class, which is all "la la la subtext what subtext what do you mean I'm soending all my time with her she has a crush on me huh???"

Oh, don't get me wrong -- I think Faith had romantic (or at least sexual/obsessive) feelings for Buffy, and Buffy had some kind of uncomfortable inkling of that, which *could* have turned into a romantic relationship. I think it was subtexty romantic in S3 -- and probably even in S7 Faith is still sort of in love with Buffy. I just mean that at the end, the peace they come to is friendshippy, rather than romantic -- Faith has Robin and Buffy's all "I am woman, hear me not need a romantic partner to define me even though I respect the fact that Spike died saving my ass."

I like your vid. I've only watched one of the lower-quality versions so far,as I had to leave the placewhichisnotwork fairly quickly and din't have time to download another -- but Mini!Me/Puppet!Angel is a hilarious comparison. Though spike = Austin Powers has now blown my brain up into smithereens!

Beautiful vid. I loved the line "you come regular like seasons" for Ethan. Also the clip of Ethan burning off his tattoo with visions of Giles appearing behind him.

Thanks for sharing it with us!

I'd hoped Giles/Ethan lovers would enjoy it -- there's more story available to tell with Buffy and Faith, so the G/E was what I was most worried about coming across well. Glad it worked for you!

I like the Ghost vid. Seems precisely true for Giles & Ethan. Also immediately started to fuel my fanfic impulses, so is good. For Buffy and Faith it kinda works but they sort of moved past it. G&E not had the chance.

That's where I am on B/F too; I think they've moved past at least the desperate super-conflicted part, and into an edgy sort of peace.

Damn, girl, that rocks! Saved it off to my hard drive to show starbrow this evening. She and I have been going through, watching the old Buffy eps in order (courtesy of Netflix), and she's been making *serious* comments about the Buffy/Faith slash lately. This might inspire her to get writing. :D

I loved the vid. Good editing and good choice of scenes. Thanks for the G/E in particular. It's just too rare. The Buffy/Faith parts were effective, but the G/E was really moving. [my own personal preferance, of course]

btw, which prog did you use to make the vid?

2004-04-12 06:53 am (UTC) (Link)

Thanks! It was definitely Giles/Ethan who first struck me as "Damn, this song is them." Followed rapidly by "But there's not enough Ethan footage to pull off a song this long. But it applies to Buffy/Faith too; in fact maybe I'd rather... hmm. Hey. Well..." etc. ;-)

I used Adobe Premiere.
