Adventures in Krogering
maeyan (in the soup aisle, looking at Random Impulse Buys hanging on display-strips) : *holds up tube*
maeyan: "What does Hello Kitty flavored lip gloss taste like?"
mpoetess: "..."
mpoetess: "I... can't answer that. This is a family store."
mpoetess: *stares silently at maeyan for several seconds*
maeyan: (coming closer with cart) "What?"
mpoetess: "Just composing the LJ post in my head."

mpoetess: *attempts to put soup in cart*
maeyan: *turns cart away each time I bring soup near it*
maeyan: "The cart rejects that soup."
mpoetess: *holds up soup* "Clam chowder?"
maeyan: "The cart is... confused."
mpoetess: "I thought the cart liked clam chowder?"
maeyan (who likes clam chowder, not that it matters, since the soup is mine): "The cart...is having an identity crisis."
maeyan: "The cart wishes it were IRL."1
mpoetess: *stares at maeyan more*
maeyan: *laughs in crazed manner*
mpoetess: "Now I'mcomposing the footnote to the LJ post."

She bought me the lip gloss. As a prompt, so I wouldn't forget to make the LJ post. It does not taste like Hello Kitty. It tastes like vaguely-sugar-flavored stuff, like pretty much every other liquid lip-gloss. It smells like watermelon.

o/~ Let's go Krogering, for the best of everything, including the price! o/~

Good lord, I have not lived in a Kroger area in more than ten years, and that came to mind IMMEDIATELY.

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs, where we didn't have Kroger1, and I can't for the life of me remember if Jewel Food Stores even had a jingle, though I know they did tv ads. But after ten years in Indy, "Let's. Go. Kro-ger-ing!" is deeply embedded in my head.

__

1We had Empire Carpets though. 588-2-3-hundred, Empire! And "When you're thinkin' Lincoln, Lincoln, better carpeting for less, call National 2-9000, National 2-9000." Aaaaand advertising has warped my childhood.

And the Empire Carpet guy is still going! They've tried adding a 1- 800 to the jingle but it's just not the same.

Where in the burbs are you from? I lived in Skokie (when very small), then Wilmette.

I don't remember Jewel having a jingle either. Damn, now you 've got me trying to remember the theme song to 'Magic Door'.

I'm from northwest Indiana, which is still in the Chicago viewing (and cable) area; we didn't and still don't have any of our own tv stations, except for a PBS channel out of Gary/Merrillville and one public access cable channel, as far as I know.

A room zoom zoom, a room zoom zoom,
A room zoom gillie gillie ah sa sa.
(As this is probably Yiddish-based, I'm sure the transcription is off.)
Come through the Magic Door with me,
And many are the wondrous things you'll see...

I had to cheat on the last line, though.

It isn't even a good tune or anything, just MORE CATCHY THAN NATURE SHOULD ALLOW.

oy. I'll be singing that on my deathbed, I suspect.

I know you *so* well. ;-)

And - in a reply to a comment further down? It seems *everybody* is in the Chicago viewing area - we even used to get it out here in the am hours. Empire carpet. *shakes head* Haven't been self-employed1 in about, er, damn...seven yearS (?!?) I don't know if it's still available.

1 Self-employed and thereby able to watch TV all day/night long in the background, while working all day/night long...ah, the good ol' days?

The Empire commercial has showed up on southern Indiana tv too when I was in college -- I think they may advertise pretty far out of the actual Chicago broadcasting area!

Yeah, I think I knew they served Indy because I've heard the 1-800-588 etc, and back when we caught it in Evansville they didn't have that, afaik.
