Dear Joss,
Either you have Issues, or I do. Though I'm certainly not ruling out the 'both' scenario.

Fred in Release (aiming at Connor) | Leia in A New Hope (aiming at... stormtroopers, I think)

Who directed release? That would be our "Issues" man...

My, I love both those shots.

James A. Contner. And DeKnight and the Siamese Twins co-wrote it. So no direct Joss involvement on the surface.

Not sure I get what you're saying - I mean, a woman pointing a gun looks pretty much like a woman pointing a gun...

There must be lots of shots of women pointing guns in films/TV - some of them are bound to have similar hairstyles...?

Mostly it's just the (probable coincidence) of Fred's hairstyle right there, which was pulled back from her face at a lower point, and is curlier, than it usually is, so it mimics the same shape that Leia's cinnamon-buns give her, and the drapey effect of slim arms poking out of those tunic-style sleeves. Most women you see pointing guns on film are actually not wearing that sort of very feminine style of outfit, and doing the ladylike-but-determined grip of the gun.

Joss is a bit of a collector - the shots of Buffy deflecting missiles as Giles sings about standing in her way, are just like one of the opening scenes in "Kung Fu" where Kwai Chang Caine is having stuff chucked at him by other monks...
And the number of 3rd Rock references I keep seeing in Buffy is beyond a joke!

*nodnod* He openly admits the scenes of Buffy dodging bullets in the S4 finale are lifted from the Matrix, I think. He also has a thing for re-using blocking (where/how the actors are positioned) between River/Fred and River/Illyria, which is what makes me tease him in absentia about his Fred-issues.

You. Are. So. Very. Right.

I think Joss's Issues are my Issues too, because I find it very, very funny. I'm sure he didn't mean it that way, just...

Tip of the geek!beanie?

Could be - he's very much the fanboy. And/or an illustration of his Fred-fixation issues. Though if he's consciously making parallels, Leia would be an odd one, since she's not uber-skinny, or flakey/crazy.

I remember thinking that when the episode came out. It was definitely Weird.

I think I've just recently caught part of A New Hope -- my roomie was watching the second trilogy in lieu of ever seeing RotS. So the Leia image was stuck in my head, and when I caught that scene in Ats, I went "No - no way!"

Also, hee icon!

Hahahahaha! Never noticed that before. Thanks.

I live to give people brainworms that they will now never be able to rid themselves of.

Great catch. I think you're right. It reeks of geeks.

2005-06-06 03:24 pm (UTC) (Link)

Joss is an utter fangeek.

2005-06-04 07:46 pm (UTC) (Link)

Yup, definately one of those potayto/potahto theft/homage moments. There's another moment when Fred looks like a well-known screen vixen, but bedamned if I can remember right now what it is...oh, well, so stupid lately, what can I say?

Julia, life is rich and full and the pollen is getting to me

In season 4 and 5, Fred often looks like an undefined (to me anyway) 40's/50's starlet, when her hair is down and in those loose curls. I keep thinking I know who she resembles, but can't put my finger on it.

2005-06-06 02:29 am (UTC) (Link)

Ahaha. That's totally what I said.

It is good to know that either I am not insane, or it's a mass psychosis.
