Uhhhh - (Buffy Season 8 Thought)
Updating my "Where my RP Xander's world took a left turn from canon" post led me to go, "Wait, what?" I'm not sure the thought hadn't niggled at me before, but apparently I let it slide until I actually had reason to poke myself (not dirty) about cause and effect.

Those of y'all who are current with BtVS Season 8 comics (actually, just up to the end of the first arc), riddle me this.

How the hell did the First Evil appear as Warren to Andrew in Season 7, if, according to Amy in the S8 comics, he didn't die when Willow flayed him?

It may have been discussed in fandom already; I haven't really been hunting down meta on the comics. Or there may have been a reference that explains it in the text itself that I missed.

It was explained in the letters section of a season 8 comic: His heart stopped, momentarily. That's enough.

(*cough* Joss fucked up, *cough*)

2008-01-08 03:17 pm (UTC) (Link)

Yeah, I was foreseeing that as a possible (but lame) explanation, I just didn't remember seeing anyone say that in the text. Bad form, Whedon. Bad form. You don't get to explain away a glaring canon error in out-of-canon material and have it, you know. Count.

*Now feels fully justified in gleeing that FH Xander's Amy left town right after Buffy died, and that I said so before the Warren reveal in the comics*

May I just make one teeeeny tiny snarky comment and say "Wait, we're thinking the Season 8 comics are trying to hold any resemblance of continuity?"

2008-01-08 03:22 pm (UTC) (Link)

Well, Joss is famous for "Continuity is what I say it is this week," anyway, but after all the fannish brouhaha about whether the comics are canon or not and Joss coming out and stating that yes they are (until he decides otherwise next week) I'm even more critical than ever.

Especially because when they're on, they're right on, and when they're off, it's painful. (Faith? Rocks. Xander? Is okay so far except for chrissake get him out of the damn Nick Fury togs. Giles: Dear lord, someone hire a fucking dialogue beta for him.)

Warren didn't die? o.O

What, did someone put a bandaid on him in time?

*assumes you dun mind being spoiled since you done clicked the cut*

Amy Madison, in her capacity as Official Crazyass Retcon Chick already (don't get me started on the personality shift post-rat), was watching Willow during Season 6, saw Warren had power, and saved him by making him a new 'skin' out of magic. They both survived being trapped in the Hellmouth when Sunnydale collapsed and stayed there for six months until they were rescued by the Initiative version 3.0: We're Like Them Except We Actively Hate Buffy. Warren is now walking around skinless.

What, did someone put a bandaid on him in time?

Wouldn't that have required any of the Scoobies to learn first aid? I mean thanks to Dawn we already know that apparently no one in town knows how to apply pressure and elevate.

I never even got to the Faith arc in the comics. There was something about the way he was telling the story that bugged me (felt more like an outline than a fleshed out story to me) and then he brought back one of my favourite characters -- and killed him for, as far as I can tell, mostly shock value. That's when I put my fingers in my ears and went "la, la, la, la, can't hear you (read you?)" about season 8.

The John Winchester comic wasn't any better for following established canon either and I stopped reading that one too because of it. (well that and the art sucked like a very large sucking thing)

*sigh* Considering the amount of time and money I used to put into comic collecting this was a very demoralizing attempt at sticking my toe back into the comics waters.

*nod* I felt that the Ethan thing was a big WTF too. Oh no, the Evil Government Organization Who Think They're Justfied proved how serious they are by.... killing someone even most of the protagonists think of as a badguy, and the viewers/readers know is morally dark gray? Who was it even supposed to have an effect on, besides annoying his fans?

I mostly follow the comic for Xander, not to update myself on where "Real" Xander is (because the comics have not sold themselves to me as well-written enough to be the same story) but to keep track of official continuity* for FH purposes, and to enjoy the dialogue when it's good.

*I...meant to put quotes around that and then couldn't decide where they should go because with Joss, continuity always needs airquotes.

I wondered the same thing myself. But since I'm reading the comics from the personal standpoint that it's "alternate canon", I can forgive the un-BTVS-ness of some parts of it.

2008-01-08 04:34 pm (UTC) (Link)

*nod* I have to be kind of schizophrenic about it - when I read, it's for 'Okay, how is the official story going so I can play with why it didn't happen that way for my RP character" at the same time as "I want more of my favorite character-voices, even if I look at it as AU."

*insert rant about how Buffy comic is annoying on many levels, but one of which is how the universe about a kick-ass heroine has been turned into the world where apparently no girl can keep her clothes on or go for five minutes without covering herself with water*

I think Joss appears to have admitted in an answer to a letter at the back of one of the comics that he forgot about Warren having to have been dead.
